Iran Visa for French Citizens

France classifies the entire territory of Iran as formellement déconseillé — its strongest category, applied to the whole country rather than to border provinces. That is the first thing a French traveller needs to know and most visa pages do not mention it at all.

The second thing is that the visa itself is straightforward. French passport holders are not in the guided-tour group, a visa on arrival is available at €75 for thirty days, and France Diplomatie itself publishes the procedure. Those two facts sit awkwardly together, and this page keeps them both rather than choosing the comfortable one.

What France Diplomatie Actually Says

The French classification system has four levels and Iran sits in the highest of them across the whole map. There is no green corner, no province where the advice softens; the rating is uniform, and the stated reason is a regional security situation described as extremely volatile.

French nationals already in the country and unable to leave are told to exercise maximum vigilance and to register with the embassy in Tehran. France stops short of the German instruction to leave, which is a real difference between the two advisories and worth knowing if you are comparing them.

On dual nationality the wording is direct: Iranian authorities do not recognise it, and a Franco-Iranian who enters Iran on an Iranian passport cannot request French consular protection. Men over seventeen who are not in order with Iranian military service are warned of difficulties during their stay.

The Visa, Step by Step

France Diplomatie publishes the procedure itself, which is unusual and useful, and what follows matches it.

Thirty days, extendable twice by thirty days inside Iran, for a maximum of ninety. Extensions are handled at provincial immigration offices and are routine when the passport is not a restricted one.

The Guided-Tour Rule Does Not Apply to You

Only three nationalities must travel on an approved itinerary with a licensed guide: American, British and Canadian. French passport holders are not among them and may travel independently.

Several agency pages imply otherwise to European readers. The visa guide lays out all five routes so you can see which one your passport takes, and it is not the expensive one.

If You Hold Both Passports

The Franco-Iranian position turns on one decision made before you fly.

Which passport you enter on decides what France can do for you. Enter on the Iranian one and French consular protection is not available — this is France’s own wording, not a caution we are adding.

Iran will regard you as Iranian regardless. Entering on the French passport does not settle the question from Iran’s side; it settles what France is able to argue.

Military service. Men over seventeen who are not in order face difficulties on entry and, more often, on exit.

Get advice before booking, not after. The embassy in Paris and lawyers who handle these cases are the right source. A tour operator is not, and that includes us.

What the Advisory Does to Your Cover

A formellement déconseillé rating is the standard trigger in French and European policy wordings for excluding claims. The policy is not cancelled and nobody tells you anything; it simply fails to respond when you claim.

The Iranian policy sold with the visa is genuine and small — roughly ten thousand euro of medical cover and limited repatriation, against an air ambulance out of Iran costing a multiple of that. Airspace and Routings

EASA has instructed European operators not to fly within Iranian airspace at any altitude. French travellers therefore route through third countries, schedules move at short notice, and a connection that looked comfortable when booked may not be.

Leave a spare day around any connection and avoid non-refundable onward tickets timed tightly against an Iranian departure.

Who Helps You, and Where

France maintains an embassy in Tehran, at 64 rue Neauphle-le-Château, with a working consular section. Registration on the Ariane system before you travel is what makes you findable, and it takes five minutes.

The limit is the dual-nationality one set out above. For a French citizen with no Iranian connection the embassy is a real resource; for a Franco-Iranian who entered on an Iranian passport, France has said plainly that it is not.

Before You Pay Anyone

Ask what the current classification is, and when it last changed. An operator who does not track it is not tracking anything else either.

Ask for the advisory clause of the insurance in writing. Before the deposit, not after.

Ask what happens to your money if the airspace closes. It closed within the last year.

Ask why, if you are told you need a guided tour. For a French passport there is no legal reason, and a guided trip is worth choosing on its merits instead.
