The world's oldest continuously inhabited city — where Elamite, Achaemenid and Sassanid layers lie exposed in open air
Susa is among the oldest continuously identified urban sites in the world, with settlement layers dating back roughly 6,000 years. The Code of Hammurabi stele was unearthed here by French archaeologists in 1901 — carried to Susa as war plunder by an Elamite king roughly 500 years after it was first carved in Babylon, where it remained buried until its discovery gave the modern world its clearest window into ancient Mesopotamian law. The Achaemenid kings built their winter palace here under Darius I, one of three great royal complexes alongside Persepolis and Pasargadae.
Chogha Zanbil ziggurat (c. 1250 BCE), built as the religious centrepiece of the Elamite planned city of Dur-Untash, was the first Iranian site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Originally rising in five separately founded tiers to roughly 53 metres, only around half that height survives after Assyrian destruction in 645 BCE. The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System — a UNESCO-listed network of Sassanid-era canals, tunnels and water-powered mills — remains partially functional after 1,700 years of continuous use.
Khuzestan's Arab-Iranian cultural blend is most visible in its cuisine: Masgoof (grilled river fish), Kubbeh (fried bulgur-and-meat dumplings) and spiced date confections are local staples. The province is Iran's oil heartland and was the principal theatre of the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), a history still very present in memorials and the scarred urban fabric of Khorramshahr. The Tomb of Daniel in Shush draws Jewish, Christian and Muslim pilgrims alike.
Shushtar's historical waterfall and mill complex, just 90 kilometres from Susa, is one of the most dramatic industrial heritage sites in the Middle East. The Dezful suspension bridge, one of the oldest in the world still in use, crosses the Dez River in a city that was entirely rebuilt after wartime bombing. Ahvaz, the provincial capital, offers the Karun River waterfront and a lively traditional bazaar as a comfortable urban base for exploring the wider region.
Khuzestan is the cradle of some of the world's oldest civilisations. Susa (Shush) holds Elamite and Achaemenid palace ruins where the Code of Hammurabi was famously unearthed, overlooked by a striking French-built castle. Choqa Zanbil, the best-preserved ziggurat outside Mesopotamia and a UNESCO site, rises from the plain in monumental mud-brick tiers. The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System — a UNESCO 'masterpiece of creative genius' — channels the Karun River through Sassanid canals, tunnels and waterfalls still partly in use. The Tomb of Daniel in Susa draws pilgrims of several faiths, and the region's Bakhtiari and Arab cultures give it a cuisine and music all its own.
