Kish Island

Kish flourished as a major Persian Gulf trading hub between roughly the 5th and 13th centuries; the ruins of Harireh cover over 100 hectares of coastline and preserve a mansion, bathhouse, mosque and pottery workshops from its peak. The island's Greek Ship — a Scottish-built cargo steamer that ran aground on 25 July 1966 after passing through several owners — has become an unlikely symbol of Kish, its rusting silhouette against the sunset drawing more photographers than any ancient site.

Kariz Underground City reuses a 2,500-year-old qanat network at depths of around 16 metres, with ceilings containing fossils estimated at 270–570 million years old, now converted into galleries and small museums. Harireh Ancient City's open-air ruins are best visited in the cooler morning or late afternoon, when the low light picks out the remaining wall courses and tiled surfaces.

Kish's Bandari food culture draws on Persian Gulf seafood traditions — grilled hammour, spiced rice dishes and fresh shrimp from the surrounding waters. The island's free-trade status makes it a shopping destination for Iranians as well as international visitors, with malls, bazaars and waterfront markets all within easy reach of the beachfront. Many nationalities can enter Kish visa-free for up to two weeks.

The nearby island of Hormuz, reached by a short ferry, has rust-red beaches and soil so iron-rich locals bake it into bread, alongside Portuguese fort ruins and artist colonies. Qeshm Island (Iran's largest island and a UNESCO Global Geopark) is accessible by boat or a short flight. The mainland port of Bandar Abbas, an hour away by ferry, serves as a gateway to the wider Hormozgan province and its own string of Gulf islands.

Kish is Iran's resort island, built for leisure. The eerie Harireh Ancient City preserves the ruins of a once-thriving medieval port. The Kariz Underground City, a 2,500-year-old qanat network, has been transformed into a cool subterranean gallery and dining space. The half-sunk Greek Ship wreck on the western shore is the classic sunset photo spot. Kish is ringed by clear Persian Gulf waters ideal for diving, glass-bottom boats and watersports, and the Dolphin Park and bird garden suit families. Duty-free shopping malls and a relaxed coastal atmosphere make it a distinctly different stop from mainland Iran.
